The Band

Bengas was formed in 2001 by a group of Czech Romany musicians who share a common love of jazz, Latino, and funk. Included in their shared musical passion is a desire to explore the roots of Romany music and add to the genre. Adhering to this goal, Bengas has since released two albums of their own compositions, Dža (2003) and Amen Phiras (2005), which include a few of the more than three-hundred interpretations in their repertoire of songs inspired and written by their ethnic artistic predecessors.

Known for addictive rhythms and harmonies that whip up audiences into a dancing frenzy, Bengas has played hundreds of engagements and festivals both domestically and abroad. Highlights of the band success include opening for the Gipsy Kings in 2004, performing with legendary Czech singer Hana Hegerova at her debut at Prague's National Theatre, numerous charity and benefit performances broadcast live from prestigious locations on Czech television.

Bengas is a six-member ensemble lead by singer-songwriter and guitarist Migel Hovat. Franta Cervenak and Robert Marcin enhance the group’s sound on guitar and vocals, Martin Sivak adds depth on bass while his 13-year-old son, Radek, provides rhythm with percussion and congas. Lukas Troyan completes the pulsating beat on drums.

The Tour

Now with the support of the Czech Center, Bengas will be performing at the New York Gipsy Festival, The Czech Street Festival and at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. from 2 October 2007.
